RFA has teamed up with an amazing organization to help bring awareness to an important cause plaguing all communities. Human trafficking; there's an estimated 36 million people enslaved today.

Our Human Trafficking virtual race now benefits Polaris, a leader in the global fight to eradicate modern slavery. Named after the North Star that guided slaves to freedom in the U.S., Polaris systemically disrupts the human trafficking networks that rob human beings of their lives and their freedom.

Description

I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever
human beings endure suffering and humiliation.
We must always take sides.
Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim.
Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented
-Elie Wiesel

This virtual race is to bring awareness to Human Trafficking, a.k.a modern slavery. Human trafficking is the world’s fastest growing criminal enterprise as a $32-billion-a-year industry, according to the U.S. State Department. Did you know there are more slaves today than in the whole 400 years of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade? Race isn’t a key factor in slavery today; it is an economic endeavor that thrives on weakness, manipulation, vulnerability, and deprivation. What shocked me the most in researching this is that it is everywhere, even the United States, in your town.

“Victims of human trafficking harvest grain, work in packaging plants, and supply labor for building projects in hopes of providing for their families. They weave carpets, wait tables, staff kitchens, and clean homes and hotels in fear of deportation. They sing in bars, film porn movies, and sell their bodies to keep pimps from beating them.” (© 2012 Stop Traffick Fashion)

This was my very first 5K walk and what a great experience to do the walk for a cause I believe in. The medal I received is beautiful and a great motivator to participate in future Races for Awareness!
